Add a web app to your iPhone or iPad
A job guide is easier to find when it has an icon beside the other tools you use. Adding that icon takes only a few steps on supported versions of Safari. It does not automatically download everything in the app.
The steps below follow Apple’s current documentation, checked October 25, 2026. They have not been tested on a physical iPhone or iPad for this guide. Menu placement can differ by system version.
On iPhone in Safari
- Open the app’s website in Safari.
- Open Safari’s sharing options. Depending on the layout, you may first open the page menu, then choose Share.
- Find Add to Home Screen. Apple says you can add a missing action through Edit Actions at the bottom of the list.
- Enable Open as Web App when offered, then choose Add.
- Return to the Home Screen and open the new icon.
Check that you opened the expected site before entering business information. Give it a name staff will recognize.
On iPad in Safari
Open the website, then open Share. Apple’s documented route includes the More control before Add to Home Screen. Enable Open as Web App and choose Add. The icon is added on that device.
If your menu uses a different layout, consult the linked Apple guide for your iPadOS version. Do not assume an instruction written for an older iPhone matches your iPad.
An app window and a shortcut are different
WebKit documents the option to open any added site as a web app in iOS and iPadOS 26. Turning that option off creates a bookmark-style experience instead. Earlier versions can behave differently based on the site’s configuration.
Neither choice proves the app is ready offline. Before relying on it at a job, complete the app’s download process and run its offline check. Notifications also depend on the app, platform support, and permission; an icon alone does not enable them.
Check your work before removing anything
Create a harmless test record if the app stores entries. Close it, reopen from the icon, and check the record. Ask how to export it and where a backup should go.
Do not remove the app or clear website data as a first troubleshooting step when it holds the only copy of your work. Export first. You can keep using the website in Safari if installation is unavailable or unnecessary.
