What is a progressive web app?

Say you clean six rooms in a building with patchy reception. You want to check each room off on your phone, close the screen, and find the same list when you come back. You do not need a social network or a customer portal. You need your checklist.

A progressive web app, usually shortened to PWA, is a web app designed to offer useful app-like features where the browser supports them. You reach it through a web address. You may also be able to add it to your home screen and open it in its own window.

Start with the job it does

The useful part is the checklist, calculator, reference guide, or other task. Installation is a convenient way to get back to it. People should usually be able to try the website before deciding to install it.

For the cleaner, a sensible first version might show today’s job, the rooms to check, and a button to export the completed list. It can leave scheduling, payments, and team management to tools the business already uses.

An icon does not tell the whole story

A home-screen icon does not prove an app works without internet. Offline use has to be designed into the app. The same goes for saving records, sending notifications, and sharing work between phones.

Ask the builder to show the exact task in airplane mode. Close the app and open it again. Check that the saved result is still there. A page that opens offline but loses the completed checklist is not ready for this job.

Know where the work is saved

A simple app may keep the checklist only on that phone. That can be useful when you do not want an account, but it means the owner needs an export and backup routine. A second phone will not automatically see the first phone’s records.

An app with a server can support shared records, but it also needs access rules, sync behavior, and ongoing support. Choose that extra work when the task needs it.

Try it before making a big commitment

Choose one device and one real task. Ask someone who does the work to try a normal entry and a correction. Check the result together.

For a first conversation with a builder, bring the checklist you already use. Ask: “What can I do without reception, and how do I get my work back if this phone is lost?” Those answers matter more than the label PWA.
